![]() With the creation of an Autodesk account, users can also export their newly created models to further manipulate in popular 3D modeling software. Catch can be used to create 3D models of people, places, and things. It does this by stitching together the images with common visual structures automatically, then asking the user to help connect points that could not be determined through software. Instead of taking the extra effort to switch between platforms, with the 2015 version of AutoCAD, these users can now stay on the Mac design side all the time to complete their project, he said.Catch uses photogrammetry technology to create a 3D model out of multiple pictures taken by the user. Then, when the Layer State review step came up, they'd switch over to Windows, complete the step, then switch back over to Mac to continue working." To combat this, they all installed Parallels on their Macs so they could also run AutoCAD for Windows. "When the whole office switched to Macs, they bought AutoCAD for Mac and quickly found that the feature they relied upon didn't exist. "There is an architecture office I visited in Chicago that has historically used Layer States as part of their review process," Dickerson told us. He shared an example of how the lack of these features in the Mac software in the past has hindered cross-platform collaboration. The addition of Quick Select was a big request from Mac users, Dickerson said. The feature also includes a "preview" option to test a selection before finalizing it. Also new is access to the Quick Select tool, which allows users to quickly select objects based on query criteria, enabling them to include exactly what they need for a drawing. Mac users also now can use a new Data Linking feature to link a table designed in AutoCAD to data in a Microsoft Excel file, something only Windows users could do before. Before this release, Mac users couldn't view any Layer States information that their colleagues working in Windows had embedded in a drawing, he said. "Previously, Mac users could view Dynamic Blocks in a drawing they received from a Win user, but could not edit them, (nor) make their own," Dickerson said.ĪutoCAD designers on the Mac platform also can now save layer settings in a feature called Layer States, which stores information like color, line type, and information about whether a layer is turned off, frozen, or locked. One is the Dynamic Blocks feature, the inclusion of which in the new software now allows Mac users to insert one block that can change shape, size, or configuration instead of inserting several static blocks. ![]() New to the 2015 versions of both software releases are a number of features that previously were only available to Windows users of the software. The main difference between AutoCAD and AutoCAD LT are that the LT version does not have 3D capabilities, network licensing, or the ability to extend AutoCAD capabilities via APIs, features that are all present in AutoCAD. Since we want AutoCAD to be available to our customers on whatever platform they choose, it's important that people who choose Mac aren't at a disadvantage." "In the last couple of years, this has become much more prevalent. "We're recognizing that the growth of Mac usage in general is fueling a surge in cross-platform offices, and also projects that include folks on both platforms," Dickerson told us. Autodesk decided to make this the focus of the release in an acknowledgement of the software's increasing popularity on the Mac platform, he said. Key to the new releases are changes that facilitate project collaboration between designers working on Macs and those working on PCs that historically have found it difficult when using platform-specific versions of AutoCAD, Micah Dickerson, senior product manager, AutoCAD Products, told Design News. Mac designers who collaborate cross-platform using Autodesk CAD software will find it easier with new 2015 versions of AutoCAD and AutoCAD LT from the longtime design software provider.
